Where are cryogenic materials?

Liquid Nitrogen

A working cylinder is shared by the 3rd floor LSI, and is located in the bay next to the X-ray beam room (room 3358) housed within the Stuckey lab. Cryo gloves and face shields are available in this room, but are not to be removed.

If the cylinder is empty, fresh cylinders are available on the 2nd floor, room 2465. There is a labelled space in the hallway leading to this room for empty cylinders. You will need keycard access to open the Nitrogen fill room.

Dry Ice

A communal dry ice chest is available in the 5th floor dishwashing station.

Handling containers

There is currently no lab dewar for nitrogen. Use an appropriately sized styrofoam box for handling. Dry ice may be collected in the black ice buckets available in the lab. Avoid using laboratory plastics for cryogenic materials. DO NOT use glassware for cryogenic materials.

Cryo handling gloves

The lab owns a set of mid-arm length waterproof cryo gloves. They are kept in position 3NW1A drawer 1. Please return them to this location, or change the location in Quartzy if they are to be permanently relocated.

Disposal

Either material may be disposed of simply by leaving the container open, so long as the container has been properly labeled to identify the contents. If there is a large amount of dry ice remaining, it can be returned to the 5th floor chest so long as it is still in pellet form - no powder, shards, or bricks. If a large amount of nitrogen must be disposed of, it can be discarded on the ground in any open environment (lab floor bushes outside, etc). Do not leave either material in a small enclosed space, such as the TIRF or cell culture rooms. They are potential suffocation hazards as they evaporate/sublimate.
